The Naked Face Formula

Even a no-makeup look requires a bit prep work. Follow these simple steps to achieve a fresh face on your wedding day.

To get started on your radiant no-makeup look, prep the face by exfoliating and cleansing, followed by a mild toner to remove excess oil, says Krystyn Johnson, a makeup artist and co-owner of Bridal Beauty Chicago. If you have great skin, the next step is a tinted moisturizer to even out skin tone while still appearing natural, says Johnson. But for more coverage, use a hydrating moisturizer and then apply a liquid foundation with a dampened sponge only where needed.

“If you have normal or dry skin, you can add a small amount of MAC’s Strobe Cream or Smashbox’s Artificial Light Luminizing Lotion to your tinted moisturizer or foundation,” Johnson says. “But for oily skin, lightly dab the illuminating cream on your check bones and down the bridge of your nose.”

When necessary, use concealer sparingly on darker or redder areas, such as under the eye, says Portland, Ore.-based makeup artist Kirstie Wight. For cheeks, she likes cream blush that blends softly into the skin while adding a bit of dewiness, such as Nars Orgasm powder blush: “It’s a sheer peachy-pink that’s universally flattering and gives you that lit-from-within look that brides love.”

To achieve plain peepers that still pop, Wight recommends creating a subtly contoured eye with one shadow slightly lighter than your skin to wash all over the lid to the brow bone, and a medium shade to blend into the crease. Next, curl your lashes and apply a dark-brown mascara, working it into the base of your lashes so that they appear fuller and give your eyes some definition, says Johnson.

For your lips, skip the liner and lipstick in favor of a lip balm or lipstain that’s similar to the natural color of your lips, says Johnson, and avoid any products that are shiny, shimmery or glittery.
